(Originally Published 6-2008) On my recent visit to Arkansas I got the opportunity to visit the Southern Living Magazine Idea House. The house is located in Red Oak Ridge, near Hot Springs Arkansas. This house was everything I expected a large new construction Southern house to be. The 5,500 square foot house has 4 bedrooms and an office, 5 ½ bathrooms, game room, theater room, wine closet, sewing room, computer loft and a 3 car garage. And little, if any environmental elements.
List price approx $1.65 million.
What struck me most about this house is how differently people live around the country. Sure Southern Colorado has it’s large houses, even extravagant homes. Maybe it was all the holiday decorations (included with a full price offer) that threw me. But in the West for that kind of money we would get a nicely appointed house and probably some acreage. This house was on what looked like an oversized city lot. Another thing that impressed me was that the volunteers in the house said that several serious buyers had been through and taking measurements.
Different strokes for different folks. I wish them well, it was a very nice house.

As a travel writer, your observation struck a similar chord in me – the different ways people live in various parts of the country. As for the Southern Living Idea House in Red Oak Ridge, we are thrilled Hot Springs was selected for the project. From what I’ve heard, some of the folks from Florida and California who have seen the house marveled at “how much” house you can get for your money here.” I guess it’s all in your perspective.

As for Hot Springs, you may have heard geographer Warren Bland recently named Hot Springs, Ark. the No. 1 place in America to retire.
I gotta admit, Hot Springs is a pretty cool place to live, even for those of us who aren’t yet retired.

Rebecca, Hot Springs is very pretty indeed. This house was just a different “stroke” for differnt folks. Not that I wouldn’t mind trying it out for awhile!
